Cafe’s

Coffee vs. Coffee Coffee:

With so many variations, what does the word “coffee” mean to you?  For me “coffee” = “latte”.  The old school definition of “coffee” is too watery for my tastes and will be referred to as “coffee coffee” or “the poor (wo)man’s coffee”

Gene Cafe (Mount Pleasant)
Good. Slow. Different.  Just make sure you have the time and patience to wait in line.   Thankfully we happened on “free” metered parking that just ran out of time as we got our fix.  On the absolute plus side: lack of grimy caffiene aftertaste.  I love my coffee but I always need some water to “refresh” afterwards.  Not so necessary here ^^

Elysian (Broadway)
One of my fav’s.  One the the more well-trained cafe’s in Vancouver – the standard of coffee is very consistent and I haven’t been disappointed yet.

Caffe Artigiano (Hornby Street + multiple locations)
I had heard of Caffe Artigiano back in the day when Timmie’s cafe mocha was my savior.  There was (and still is) only one location in Calgary.  It wasn’t until Vancouver that their latte’s have worked their way onto my drink list.  It’s a flavor that grows on you.  Very smooth and has a particular taste that always seems to be linked with what is classified as “authentic Italian”.  Not having been to Italy, I can’t tell you if that’s true or not.

Coo Coo Coffee (Davie)
Latte was good, nothing overly spectacular.  I wouldn’t double shot anything though, unless you like the flavor of cigarette butts.

Starbucks (multiple locations)
Not bad for the most part.  You just have to hope that your barista is actually skilled to some degree.

JJ Bean (multiple locations)
Love the way they foam their milk.  It creates a certain “layer” at the top that tastes heavenly.  Their beans are a little more on the “bitter” side but still delish.
